China Tested Its Own Version of American Counterpart’s ‘Mother of All Bombs’

One of the major Chinese defense companies, according to the Chinese media reports, developed and tested a new deadly bomb. The bomb is being referred as the “Chinese version of the ‘Mother of All Bombs'”.

Citing the official Xinhua News Agency, The Global Times said, the massive bomb is reportedly China’s largest non-nuclear bomb. It the country’s answer to US’s ‘Mother of All Bombs’.

The massive weapon that weighs several tons has been developed by the China Ordnance Industries Group Corporation Limited, better known as Norinco. The company shared a promotional video earlier this week, showing a new aerial bomb being dropped by a Xi’an H-6K bombers, which is a version of the older Soviet Tupolev Tu-16 bombers.

Wei Dongxu, Beijing-based military analyst, on comparison of weapon’s size with the H-6K’s bomb, said may measure roughly 20 feet or five to six meters in length.

“The massive blast can easily and completely wipe out fortified ground targets such as reinforced buildings, bastions and defense shelters,” Wei said. He also suggested that the weapon could be used to clear obstacles so as to make space for an aircraft to land or just to terrify enemies.

The US – after the 2003 invasion of Iraq – developed the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast (Mother of All Bombs). However, it wasn’t used until April 2017, when a Lockheed Martin MC-130 Hercules dropped the 11 ton weapon on an ISIS complex in the Achin district of the southern Nangarhar province.

Then-Defense Secretary James Mattis did not disclose the number of causalities, after the success of the strike. He said that “frankly, digging into tunnels to count dead bodies is probably not a good use of our troops’ time.” However, Afghan officials estimated that 36 to 92 ISIS fighters were killed.

With the latest space mission achievement, wherein, a Chinese spacecraft successfully landed on the far side of the moon for the first time in the history, China has made immense progress.

Although the Chinese weapon is smaller in size and lighter in weight as compared to the US’ weapon, still China is using the same nickname, ‘Mother of All Bombs’ for its new weapon. It has been speculated that the size has been kept small intentionally, so as to ensure it could be dropped from a bomber without much hassle.
