Google Bans Updates on New Huawei Phones with US Executive Order

US President Donald Trump’s recent move of signing an executive order for restricting the Chinese tech giant Huawei in the country has seized fear amongst its manufacturers. The executive order prevents the US companies from buying any foreign telecom equipment that could possess national security risk.

According to a report on Sunday, Google would suspend some of its business operations with Huawei. There will be no Android updates or Google technical support except what is available through its open source license for new Huawei devices. It might also affect the access to apps and Gmail services on future Huawei phones outside China. There are chances that there might be a complete ban of services on Huawei equipments.

In the world of technology and speed, US President’s move has extremely ruined Huawei’s position as a number one brand. It has forced people to think twice before going for Huawei products, making them believe that the company ideally compromises with their user’s data security.

In context of Google’s recent threats, chances of Huawei’s yet-to-be-released Mate X and Mate 30 series to become the most selling 5G android phones, appears to be diminished.

However, Google’s recent statement of allowing all the updates for the existing Huawei phone has brought a relief to the current users.

“We are complying with the order and reviewing the implications. For users of our services, Google Play and the security protections from Google Play Protect will continue to function on existing Huawei devices,” said a Google spokesperson.

Other chipmakers like Intel, Broadcom, Qualcomm, and Xilinx have also stated not to supply Huawei until further notice, severely influencing its laptop manufacturing. The news has affected Huawei on a global level. It would no longer have access to components or parts produced in the US to manufacture their own new products, without prior government approval.

To safeguard its interests amidst the continuous warning threats by the US, Huawei claimed to have a “solid track record in cyber security”. They said that the US officials were attempting to suppress Huawei’s 5G networks in its international markets.

Despite Google’s denial to provide updates for new Huawei android phones, a spokesperson for Huawei said that their company has provided substantial contributions to the development and growth of Android around the world and would continue to provide security updates and after-sales services to its users in the near future.

“We will continue to build a safe and sustainable software ecosystem, in order to provide the best experience for all users globally,” he added.

Amid the US-China trade war, the continuous blame game from both the sides has led to a situation of dilemma, making it difficult for an individual to see the right way. With no serious backup, the current crisis might completely beat out Huawei from the European markets.
