Japan Sees Dawn of Reiwa Era, with Naruhito Ascending the Throne

On Wednesday morning, Japan’s Crown Prince Naruhito formally ascended the Chrysanthemum throne, becoming the 126themperor of Japan. This ascension marks the dawn of a new era, Reiwa, meaning “beautiful harmony”.

The ascension comprised of two ceremonies which took place in the Hall of Pine of the Imperial Palace. While the first ceremony started at 10:30 am and was of six minutes only, the second ceremony started at 11:10 in the morning and lasted for 20 minutes.

Only the adult males, including Prince Hitachi, Crown Prince Akishino, and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe along with his cabinet, were present in the first ceremony. Minister Satsuki Katayama was the only exception present during the ceremony as she is a part of Abe’s cabinet.

In the first ceremony, Emperor Naruhito received two of the Imperial Regalia along with the State and the Privy seals.  In the second ceremony, he addressed the citizens of the country for the first time as the Emperor.

Apart from expressing gratitude towards Emperor Emeritus and his reign, Naruhito said, “I swear that I will reflect deeply on the course followed by His Majesty and bear in mind the path trodden by past emperors, and will devote myself to self-improvement.”

In the speech, the newly appointed Emperor also prayed for the development of the nation, happiness of the people of the country and for world peace.

Emperor Emeritus, citing health issues, formally abdicated from the position of Emperor on Tuesday. He first hinted of abdication in 2016, after a heart surgery and treatment of prostate cancer when he made a broadcast saying, “I am worried that it may become more difficult for me to carry out my duties as the symbol of the state.”

Abe in his reply to the speech of the emperor said, “In a period of peace and brimming with hope, we are determined to create a future which Japan can be proud of, a society where people live together in beautiful harmony, and an era where culture can prosper.”

While working on remaining close with the citizens, it might be expected from Emperor Naruhito to have new perspective on various issues as well. It is being speculated that the new Monarchs might prove to have a better equation with the international communities as compared to their predecessors.
