Novak Djokovic qualifies to semi-final, with a dramatic win against Juan Martin
Serbian player Novak Djokovic, the best player in the world, may not have expected his match against Juan Martin Del Potro to be nail-biting affair. The quarter finals of Internazionali BNL d’Italia saw a match in which both the players performed with the flair they are known for to secure a win and qualification to the next round.
There was a time when things were not looking good for the Serbian player against his Argentine counterpart. However, the four time champion Djokovic stayed on the court, went on to avoid those grave threats and scored a win with 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-4.
It would not be wrong to say that both the players engaged in a way that got the players witness a once in a lifetime match. Earlier, Djokovic had gained victory over Juan Martin in both the previous FedEx ATP Head2Head game on clay and in the seven out of eight matches they played. However, the ninth seeded player often gained control in this match and proved to be a perseverant opponent.
In regards with the match and the challenge Del Potro proved to be, Djokovic said, “I never lost faith I could come back to the match. One break of serve, mini break in the tie-break when he was 6/4, more or less open forehand that he was making the entire match, that’s all it took for me to come back.”
“[He] missed a couple crucial points in the tie-break. Also break point third set, quite easy forehand. That’s what happens. That’s sport. I’m just really pleased to overcome.”
“I lost probably the positioning of the court over him. Towards the end of the first, he just started hitting the ball really well from both corners, also backhand side, backhand down the line. He was playing really well, gave me a lot of trouble,” he added.
After Juan Martin scored a net with a sitting forehand, the match slipped away from his hands to which Djokovic, took as a perfect opportunity to gain lead on the opponent.
Also, it won’t be justice to Juan Martin, if not mentioned that he is the only player to score most wins number of wins (10) against the top seeded player, even though he never achieved the top rank himself. As the quarter-final of Internazionali BNL d’Italia saw a match between worthy opponents, it would not be wrong to say a match like this might increase Djokovic’s chances to overcome challenges in the following matches.
