Tom Ford to Step in Diane von Furstenberg’s Shoes as New CFDA Chairman
Rumours about Tom Ford being the next chairman for the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) that were being circulated since last week, have finally come true. Ford will be succeeding the current bearer of the post Diane von Furstenberg and will be the acting chairman beginning January next year.
In a press release, Ford said that he took the position as sense of duty and “I have been in this industry for 35 years. I started in New York, and Seventh Avenue informed my business sense; it contributed in part to my success. Even though I was in Europe for 30 years, I always felt very linked to [this country] as a designer. I’ve always taken a very American approach… the thing that I bring to the CFDA, and which Diane also has, is that I think of myself as an international designer; I think from a global perspective. I’ve been shocked by how inward-looking we’ve become.”
Tom Ford will be leading the board of 19 members, including some famous designers like Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Ashley Olsen and Diane von Furstenberg, the present chairwoman who has been at the designation from the past 13 years.
Ford has been a member of CFDA since 2000, when he began working as a design assistant for CFDA member Cathy Hardwick. He has won seven CFDA awards in total in the years 1995, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2014 and 2015. His first award was for International Designer of the Year and the latest being Menswear Designer of the Year in 2015. Until 2004, he worked as the creative director for Gucci group, designing for Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent.
In April 2005, he launched his own luxury brand, starting from menswear and now offering a full collection of womenswear, accessories, eyewear and beauty too. Recently, he launched undergarments and timepieces as well.
He has staged his collections in many corners of the world, including London, Milan, New York and Los Angeles.
In a statement on Tuesday, Tom Ford said “Having lived and worked in each of the global fashion capitals of the world, I look forward to working with the Board of Directors to further the voice of American Fashion and its designers. As the Chairman, I look forward to continuing the incredible work Diane has done over the last 13 years. Diane is a true force and her contribution to the CFDA and to American fashion is immeasurable. We all owe her a great deal.”
The present chairwoman Diane von Furstenberg said “I am so excited that Tom Ford has agreed to come and lead the CFDA. American Fashion could not wish for a better visionary to further grow its impact in the global landscape. Tom is a role model for all of us, and we are very lucky to have him as the next Chairman of the CFDA.”
To be in the shoes of designers like Oscar de la Renta, Stan Herman and Bill Bass and leading the board of famous designers would certainly be a huge responsibility for Tom Ford. At the same time, he needs to address a few issues like model welfare and diversity along with the restructuring and revival of the New York Fashion Week.
