Want to experience a medieval life? Stay in these breathtakingly beautiful castles

Looking for a little medieval magic? The castles that featured in the Harry Potter, and Marie Antoinette movies, and Game of Thrones series are all available for hire, and that too at a small cost.

Doune Castle in Edinburgh, Scotland

You’ll recognize this castle from the television series Outlander. It’s a medieval castle in the Sterling district of central Scotland. If you’re on holiday in the country, you can spend a night here. But be warned that it’s rather large, maybe pretty cold, and a little daunting. If you don’t want to stay overnight, or if it’s out of your price range, take a private day tour and include a Deanston Distillery whiskey tasting nearby.

Castell de Santa Florentina, Spain

If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, you will recognize this castle. Known as Horn Hill, it’s in the woodlands of Canet de Mar, Barcelona, and is a whooping £6,000 per day.  Take it for a day, or a week, spread out on a chaise, sip Cava and plan to dominate the Westeros. It’s beautiful, especially the marble floors and stained glass windows. A perfect place to witness some medieval life.

Palace de Versailles, France

This magnificent palace has been used in over 170 films. You’ll certainly recognize it from the movies. You can do a day tour, and and marvel at the palace with all the other plebs, or you can do it in style. Take a private Zeppelin airship and include a little champagne, paying €1,740 plus.

Alnwick Castle, Northumberland, UK

If you’re crazy about Harry Potter, visit the Alnwick Castle in Northumberland that was transformed into Hogwarts by the movie-maker. You may not find chocolate frogs, huge dragons or a game of quidditch, but experience a magical journey. The castle is now a museum and is open to visitors, hosts events and weddings. Check the opening times though, since Alnwick is currently undergoing a makeover.

While you visit any of these castles, don’t forget that what you experience is what stays. So, get in to the feel of medieval life.
